INDIANAPOLIS – With the 2016 election behind us, adults have made their views on the results known, but what about the view points of children?
Becky Pokrandt, teacher at IPS’ Butler Lab School said her third and fourth grade students had lots of questions on the candidates and the democratic process leading up to the election.
Those questions and thoughts increased Wednesday morning with some students confused with the results.
"They've heard things like if I'm a different race I will be sent back,” said Pokrandt. “We have students who were happy with the results, students who were concerned and so my biggest goal for them is that we're all following the golden rule and to show respect.”
To help sort out their thoughts, students wrote letters to President-elect Donald Trump. The letters explained to Trump what the students would like to see from their next leader.
Some letters requested for less homework while others asked for more such as, “What I need from you is to respect everyone no matter what they look like. I think to be a good president you should respect and actually listen to people’s needs” and “If you want to build a wall, then could you build it out of the way of houses.”
Pokrandt said she’s proud of her students for being “so kind and accepting other views.”
