INDIANAPOLIS -- Vice President and former Indiana governor Mike Pence said he'd had plans for a long time to attend the Indianapolis Colts game on Oct. 8, but when he saw some players kneeling, he and his wife thought leaving was "the right thing to do."

This week, Pence and President Donald Trump spoke with Tony Katz of WIBC, an Indianapolis radio station.

"Everybody is entitled to their opinion," Pence said. "The president and I just believe it's not too much to ask NFL players to respect our soldiers, respect our flag and respect our national anthem. And that's why I left."

Pence stressed his family's military history, with his father and son both serving.

"There's something very special about that moment, honoring all of those who've served beneath that flag, who've fought beneath that flag," Pence said. He said he hoped NFL owners keep that in mind as they meet.

On Tuesday, the owners held a "productive" meeting in New York, but it's unclear if any changes will come to the league based on the meetings.

Pence and Katz then discussed the journey Pence has been on, from eating doughnuts together in Indianapolis to working in the White House.

In Katz's interview with Trump, the two discussed tax reform and working with Democrats before talking about the possibility of Indiana submitting a bid for the new Amazon headquarters.

"I love [Indiana]," Trump said. "It's a place I happen to love. You know, Indiana has been very good for me. Mike Pence has been terrific, he's my friend and he's been great. Anytime anybody wants to build in Indiana, I'm OK with that."

Indianapolis and Gary, Indiana have submitted bids, along with many other cities across the country.
