CARMEL, Ind. -- Indiana State Sen. Mike Delph (R-Carmel) has been ordered into active duty in the U.S. Army.

Delph has been a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve for about 10 years. He has been ordered to active duty as of Dec. 8, for a minimum of 31 days.

He will be sent to Puerto Rico to help with the recovery from Hurricane Maria.

Delph will be granted time off from his duties as a State Senator to serve in the Army, Senate President Pro Tem David Long said.

“I hope Sen. Delph’s constituents will join his fellow members of the Indiana General Assembly in sending him and his family our best wishes and prayers as he undertakes this service for his country and the American citizens in Puerto Rico,” Long said.

Delph has been a member of the Indiana State Senate since 2005.
