FOLLANSBEE, W.Va. - An American flag spotted flying upside down outside a West Virginia McDonald's the day after the election was a mistake, not a political statement, the owner says.

Owner Karen Mezan told The Herald-Star that a pulley on the pole broke Wednesday.

In the process of trying to fix the problem, the flag flipped but wasn't noticed by workers at the McDonald's, she said.

Mezan said the upside down flag was never meant to be a statement about Tuesday's election results, despite rumors that spread on social media. She said she hopes no one was offended.
