Since the city-wide smoking ban was enacted in Indianapolis in July, some smokers have been traveling to Harvey's Tavern in Beech Grove just to smoke cigarettes freely. That may soon change. The Beech Grove City Council discussed a city-wide smoking ban of its own at Monday night's meeting."It's basically the same ordinance that the city of Indianapolis has and the city of Lawrence," Mayor Dennis Buckley told RTV6's Matt Trees. "It prohibits smoking in bars, and you can smoke in social clubs such as Eagles, Moose, American Legion and VFW."Beech Grove's smoking ban, like the ones in Indianapolis and Lawrence, is sparking debate."America was built on choice. We all have the freedom to make good choices or bad choices, and we shouldn't eliminate the freedom of choice," one opponent said.On Main Street in Beech Grove, some bar owners and patrons think a smoking ban would be devastating to their business."I don't think it's a good idea at this time," one bar owner said. "I really don't think it's good for Beech Grove business. I know a lot of my friends that have a business like ours that are struggling with the smoking."
