EVANSVILLE, Ind. - An Evansville man who admitted setting an apartment building fire that killed 3 people now faces three charges of murder and 10 counts of arson.
The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor's Office filed formal charges Thursday against 31-year-old Christopher Compton. The Evansville Courier & Press reports the number of arson counts reflects the number of people injured in the Monday fire.
Prosecutor Nicholas Hermann says his office has initially filed to seek life without parole for Compton but the death penalty remains an option.
The fire killed 3-year-old Jazmine Jones; her mother, 28-year-old Keri Jones; and 76-year-old Donald Lankford. All died of smoke inhalation in the same apartment.
Compton admitted setting the fire to police. He's due in Vanderburgh Superior Court on Friday. It's not clear whether he has an attorney.
