Purdue University officials are considering a proposal to start offering some of its aviation management programs in a Persian Gulf country.

Purdue would join several other American universities with degree programs in the country of Qatar.

Purdue aviation technology department head Brent Bowen said education leaders in Qatar are working to prepare its workforce beyond oil-related jobs. Bowen has twice visited Qatar and said Purdue could also start training programs for aviation companies now in the country, the Journal & Courier reported.

Purdue officials are waiting on a draft contract for the Qatar program, but say a foundation there is expected to pay the startup costs.

Georgetown, Texas A&M, Cornell and Northwestern universities are among American schools already with Qatar programs.
