A reserve police officer accused of fatally shooting his estranged wife has been charged with murder.

Ben Hankins, a reserve officer with Gaston police, shot and killed Lisa "Nettie" Hankins, 32, during a dispute Friday morning when she was dropping off one of the couple's three children, police said.

Police said Ben Hankins called 911 just moments after the shooting.

"She pulled my gun. I'm a Gaston reserve officer. She pulled my gun on me, and I shot back," he said on the call.

The couple's 4-year-old daughter was sitting in a car outside the house at the time of the shooting. The two other children were already at school.

Delaware County sheriff's deputies said they made one run to Hankins' house in September 2010, a month after the couple filed for divorce.

Ben Hankins is set to appear in court Monday.
