The Madison County Humane Society is looking for a foster family for an emaciated dog found on a road on the outskirts of Anderson.

Shelter officials told RTV6's Kara Kenney that a woman found the young boxer unable to hold up his head and brought him to the shelter, a no-kill facility.

Shelter workers, who named the dog Nico, said the animal is having difficulty walking because he lost so much muscle mass.

"The dog did not get this way overnight," said Susie McClellan Schieve, shelter director. "This has been weeks of starvation, suffering and loneliness. He was either chained or put in a crate and ignored."

The Madison County Humane Society provides dog food for people in need.

"There is no reason for him to be in this condition," said Schieve. "People need to be educated about animal care and abuse."

Nico means "victory for the people."
