Sheriff's Deputy Indicted In Wife's Suicide

Police: Man Provided Gun To Suicidal Wife

A Harrison County Sheriff's deputy was charged Friday in connection with his wife's suicide.

State police began investigating in March 2009, when Christine Britton, the wife of Deputy John A. Britton, 30, shot herself in the couple's Ramsey home.

Investigators said the couple had been involved in a domestic situation that day and that John Britton made available the gun his wife used to kill herself.

The Louisville Courier-Journal reported that after Christine Britton threatened to kill herself, John Britton put his handgun on their bed and left the room, telling police he heard a gunshot shortly after.

A special prosecutor convened a grand jury in the case in August.

Members on Thursday handed down an indictment against John Britton on a felony count of assisting a suicide.

John Britton turned himself in during an initial hearing on Friday.

The newspaper reported that John Britton has been suspended from the department.

Christine Britton was a former Harrison County Jail Commander.
