Snow Plow Driver Strikes, Kills Pedestrian

Police Not Sure Why Victim Was Walking On Interstate

An Indiana Department of Transportation snow plow struck and killed a pedestrian on Interstate 65 in Tippecanoe County late Monday evening.

Indiana State Police 1st Sgt. Brian Olehy said Alan R. Kielb, 44, of Hammond, was walking south on the shoulder near State Road 26 when the plow struck him a little after 9 p.m.

Police said snow was falling at the time, causing reduced visibility.

The snow plow driver suffered head and neck pain and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

"The victim was not believed to have come from a stranded or disabled vehicle and was reported by passing motorists to police just moments before the crash occurred," Olehy said.

Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the crash.
