The Franklin City Council voted Monday night to broaden the city's smoking ban to include bars and clubs.

The previous ordinance, passed in 2006, prohibited smoking in restaurants and most public places, but did allow it in private bars and clubs.

The ban approved Monday by a 6 to 1 vote will tighten those restrictions.

It also eliminates the stipulation that smokers should stay at least 10 feet from the entrance of any building, replacing the wording with "a reasonable distance." The mayor's office said this was done to eliminate unnecessary violations as people walked down a sidewalk, for example.

Once implemented, the Franklin ban will be the strictest in Johnson County.
