A racially-charged encounter involving a group of Asian students and African-Americans on the Indiana University campus escalated into robbery and assault, police said.

The incident happened at about 4 a.m. Sunday at Forest Quad, IU Police Chief Keith Cash said.

"Eight Asian students were walking to Forest Quad B Tower when a group of five males and three females said, 'Hey look, here comes Chinatown. Look at all the chinks,'" Cash said in a news release.

Police said the two groups got into a verbal exchange before three or four of the blacks walked toward the Asians, battering two of them and robbing two more.

One of the Asian students was taken to a hospital with minor lacerations, police said.

Electronic equipment was stolen from the Asian students, Cash said, but police were not able to find anyone involved.

Police released a sketch of one of the attackers. They asked anyone with information to call 812-855-4111.
