Reaction online to an Indianapolis Kroger employee who police said fatally shot a man who was trying to rob the store Monday evening was swift and overwhelmingly in support of the worker.

Indianapolis police said the worker shot a man who came into the grocery store on West 71st Street and demanded cash.

A couple of Facebook pages were created in support of the as-yet-unnamed employee.

Most posters said they believe the grocer will move to fire the employee and that they are trying to build a groundswell of support for that worker.

"This worker is a hero. The robber could (have) went on a shooting spree and killed a lot of employees and customers," poster "pb" said on TheIndyChannel.com. "This guy was just protecting himself, his co-workers and customers."

Kroger's policy regarding employees with guns wasn't immediately known. A Kroger spokesman didn't immediately return a call from the Associated Press for comment concerning the employee's actions.

"He broke policy and will (lose) his job," said commenter Alex Smith, who claimed he previously worked at Kroger.

Facebook commenters said they will push Kroger to praise the employee for his actions.

"It's terrible that someone had to die, but the fact that the employee acted in self-defense is commendable," said Dan Franke.

"This guy should get a raise, not a termination," said Derek Burton.
