Authorities Hoped Someone Would Come Forward

The death of a suspect in a Greenwood woman's 2002 disappearance hasn't brought new leads in the case as authorities had hoped, Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner said Wednesday.

Joseph Nowicki, 54, of Johnson County, was named a suspect but was never charged in the disappearance of Brookley Louks. Nowicki (pictured, left) died Aug. 29 of cancer.

Nowicki denied involvement in the disappearance, but he indicated in a letter to police that he knew enough to help authorities solve the case, RTV6's Ben Morriston reported.

Hamner said authorities hoped someone would come forward with information after Nowicki died.

"We haven't heard anything -- nothing has been reported from the police that they've been getting tips or anything like that," Hamner said. "That doesn't necessarily mean it's impossible. It's just that we would have expected after the first week or two that we would have heard something, but that hasn't materialized, so we're disappointed about that."

Louks was 19 when she was reported missing June 24, 2002, and has not been seen since. Authorities believe she is dead.

Police in September said drops of what they believed to be Louks' blood were found on Nowicki's property. The blood was found during a search July 17, 2002, police said.

Louks (pictured, right) used to do errands for Nowicki, who was a friend of her father.
