Tampa woman charged with animal cruelty after giving dog C-section, police say

A Tampa woman faces a felony animal cruelty charge after performing a cesarean section on a pregnant dog that later died, police said.

Candace Patricia Hauser, 31, performed the surgery at her home despite not having a veterinary license, police said.

A Polk County, Fla., woman who thought Hauser could help deliver puppies brought her pregnant Mastiff to Hauser’s home March 4, police said. When the dog had trouble giving birth to the final two puppies, Hauser performed a C-section, closing the animal’s incision with non-medical glue. The dog died shortly afterward in her owner’s car.

A Polk veterinary hospital contacted the Polk County Sheriff’s Office about what occurred, leading to an investigation.

Hauser was arrested Saturday and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.
