TSA officials have conducted an initial review of the incident involving a TSA agent sifting through and spilling the human remains of a passenger's grandfather.

John Gross, a resident of Indianapolis' south side, told RTV6 he was returning to Indianapolis with a sealed container of his grandfather's ashes when an Orlando airport TSA agent opened the container, sifted through the ashes, spilled some of the ashes, then laughed at Gross as he tried to put the spilled ashes back into the container.

Jim Fotenos, a TSA public affairs officer, issued a statement that said the agency's review "concluded that the circumstances as described in some reports are inconsistent with what we believe transpired."

Fotenos said the TSA has been unable to reach Gross and his family for comment.

As to the agency's policy on screening human remains, Fotenos said, "TSA recognizes the importance of screening human remains with utmost respect and dignity while remaining vigilant of our security mission to protect the traveling public. It is a TSA policy that under no circumstance should a container holding remains be opened."
