HAMILTON, Ohio - One man is dead and a police officer is being treated after a shootout erupted in Butler County early Saturday morning.
A resident near 12th Street and Sipple Avenue in Hamilton, Ohio said he awoke about 7 a.m. to the sound of gunshots.
When he looked out his window, the witness said he observed a Hamilton police officer and a man wielding a rifle exchanging multiple shots.
The man crumpled in the middle of the road, the witness said. Hamilton police confirmed the man died holding a rifle on a sidewalk.
The University of Cincinnati Medical Center Air Care helicopter was dispatched to the scene at 7:30 a.m. for the officer, who radioed in his own report that he was shot in the head.
The unidentified officer arrived at UC Medical Center at about 8 a.m. Hamilton police confirmed the officer was in stable condition and would be OK.
The department was waiting to release the officer's name pending contacting family members about the incident.
The 44-year-old officer is a 16-year veteran with the Hamilton Police Department, Hamilton Detective Rich Burkhardt said.
The confrontation happened after calls were made to Butler County dispatchers of a man shooting a gun into the air before 7 a.m.
The identity of the man who died was being withheld from the public until his family was notified of his death.
