There was quite a bit of erroneous news circulating on Twitter and other social media sites during Sandy, the digital news website Buzzfeed traced a good portion of it to one user: @comfortablysmug.

The Twitter feed included posts saying all subways would be closed for the rest of the week, and that Con Edison was shutting off power to all of New York City. Con Edison corrected the tweet, saying it may shut down service in low-lying areas.

Buzzfeed's Jack Stuef outted Comfortably Smug as Shashank Tripathi, by matching Twitpics to his Youtube account.

According to Buzzfeed, Tripathi is a New York City hedge-fund analyst who managed Republican Christopher R. Wight's campaign for the House of Representatives.

A message posted by Comfortably Smug said he had resigned from the congressional campaign.  Wight's campaign website said the candidate had "accepted the resignation of campaign manager Shashank Tripathi."

This message was posted to the Twitter account late Tuesday night: “I wish to offer the people of New York a sincere, humble and unconditional apology.”

Not surprisingly, now that his identity is public, the account is inundated with angry comments.
