NEW YORK -- Glenn Frey, founding member of the Eagles, died Monday from illness-related complications. He was 67.

Frey formed the Eagles in the early 1970s with Don Henley, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon. The band went on to sell more than 120 million albums worldwide. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Frey himself won six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards as a member of the Eagles. He released 24 Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart throughout his career.

The Eagles posted on their official site Monday that Frey had "succumbed to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia."

"Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide," the band wrote.

Frey released his last studio album "After Hours" in 2012.
