Retail giant Walmart is adding positions to handle the influx of holiday shoppers.

In a statement today, Walmart officials said current associates will have priority access to hours, and it plans to hire 60,000 seasonal workers to help.

It’s “nearly 10 percent more than we hired last year,” said Gisel Ruiz, chief operating officer at Walmart.

The goal is to move shoppers through checkout lanes more quickly.

The holiday shopping season typically begins the day after Thanksgiving, or Black Friday, which this year is Nov. 28. In recent years, however, many retailers have opened with deals on Thanksgiving.
