An Indianapolis woman was seriously injured when her hair got caught in the axle of a go-kart in Whiteland over the weekend, officials said.

Shelbi Crouch, 19, was driving with a group of people at Whiteland Raceway Park on Sunday evening when she hit a bump, knocking her back in her seat, the Daily Journal reported.

That caused her hair to get caught in the axle of the kart, ripping a portion of her scalp from her head, officials said.

Crouch was airlifted to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with multiple skull fractures. She was listed in fair condition Monday.

Witnesses said Crouch was wearing a helmet and a neck brace. It was unclear if her hair was tied up before driving the kart.

Officials said the helmet and neck brace likely prevented Crouch from suffering worse injuries.
