Travel Woes Await Motorists After Race, Memorial Day

'Accelerate 465' Project About To Kick Into High Gear

A new set of travel troubles awaits motorists on Indianapolis' west side immediately after the Memorial Day weekend.

The Indiana Department of Transportation on Thursday announced new restrictions as part of the "Accelerate 465" project to widen and modernize Interstate 465, 6News' Norman Cox reported.

"We're holding off a number of changes until after the big race and Memorial Day holiday," said Will Wingfield of INDOT. "As soon as that first Tuesday after the weekend comes in, we'll be seeing a couple of different things happening."

Most of the work will be between the Interstate 74 and Interstate 65 interchanges. The 56th Street ramp to I-465 southbound will close for a month.

On- and off-ramps at 38th Street will remain open but have shorter distances for traffic to merge.

The 34th Street bridge will remain closed through July for replacement. Outside of the main work zone, southbound on- and off-ramps at Rockville Road will close for up to 15 days.

"For through traffic that comes through here on a regular basis, as far as commuters are concerned, the big impact there as well will be I-465 southbound," Wingfield said.

After rush hour on Tuesday, crews plan to cross southbound I-465 traffic into the northbound lanes so they can dig up and completely replace the southbound side. Drivers will have just three lanes each way, and they will be narrower than usual.

INDOT is completing the $83 million project because it is the oldest section of I-465 and can no longer handle the traffic volume at peak times.

This part of the project is expected to be wrapped up this year, with some cleanup work in 2009. The entire project to redo I-465 on the west side past the airport is expected to take through 2013 to complete.
