INDIANAPOLIS -- With less than a week until the RCA Dome is set to come down, officials are urging people to stay home and watch the implosion on TV.Officials with the Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority on Monday announced more information about Saturday's planned demolition, which will take place shortly after 9 a.m.About 800 explosive charges will be placed around the structure, bringing down the dome in about 25 seconds, said Senior Vice President of Shiel Sexton Inc. Tom Scheele.
"Our goal is to quickly and safely reduce the upper seating level to several piles of rubble that can be processed and hauled off site," he said.A perimeter will be established to keep spectators away from the implosion site, Scheele said. Boundaries for the zone are tentatively set for Maryland Street to the north, West Street to the west, Illinois Street to the east and Merrill Street to the south. Huge drapes will also be hung on the front of the Pan AM Plaza building and a nearby church to protect them from debris.Officials said that the best place to see the implosion in progress is from home."I really believe that the best spot will be on TV, because the media cameras will be such that you can see the high angles," Scheele said.About half of the Dome has been dismantled following the roof’s deflation on Sept. 24. Construction will begin on the $275 million expansion of the Indiana Convention Center in January.RTV6 and TheIndyChannel.com will broadcast the implosion live on Saturday morning.
