NFL Game Summary - Green Bay At Carolina

POSTED: 1:15 am EDT October 4, 2005

Jake Delhomme threw for two touchdowns and Stephen Davis ran for a pair of scores, as the Carolina Panthers held off the Green Bay Packers, 32-29, at Bank of America Stadium.

Delhomme finished 17-of-24 for 206 yards and Davis carried the ball 19 times for 51 yards for the Panthers (2-2), who rebounded from a disappointing loss last week in Miami to even their record this season.

"I felt I let us all down last week," Delhomme said. "You just want to come back and play well for your team. We did that tonight. Guys made plays around me and that makes it extremely nice."

Brett Favre went 28-of-47 for 303 yards with four touchdowns, one interception and one fumble for Green Bay (0-4), which continued its worst start since 1988 after a late rally fell short.

"To go 0-4, I think that speaks volumes," Favre said. "I never expected to be 0-4, but my job is still to lead this team in tough situations. Moping doesn't do any good."

Donald Driver ended with six catches for 92 yards and a touchdown for the Packers, who began the '88 campaign with five straight losses on their way to a 4-12 season. Green Bay hosts New Orleans next week before having a much- needed bye week.

A slow start didn't seem to phase Favre, who began to get his team back into the game in the final 15 minutes.

Down 32-13 early in the fourth quarter, the Packers began to mount a comeback. After Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila stripped Delhomme and Green Bay's Cullen Jenkins recovered and lateral led to Nick Barnett. The Packers took over on Carolina's 16 yard line with 11:55 remaining.

On the first play of the drive, Favre hit Donald Lee with a bullet in the end zone to draw within 32-21 after a successful two-point conversion pass to David Martin.

Carolina then couldn't run enough time off the clock on their ensuing possession, giving the ball back to the Packers with 7:18 remaining, but 90 yards away from the end zone.

The 90 yards proved to be a little obstacle for Favre, who marched his club the length of the field in just 4:11 to pull within 32-29. Favre went 8-for-12 on the drive, hitting Antonio Chatman with a four-yard TD pass and then connecting with Robert Ferguson for the two points, making it a three-point affair with 3:07 left.

Green Bay's defense then held the Panthers to a three-and-out and the offense took over on their own 37 yard line with 1:58 left on the clock following the ensuing punt.

Favre hit Driver for a 15-yard reception on the first play. However, the Packers couldn't get another first down as Chris Gamble broke up a pass to Driver with just over a minute left on 4th-and-2.

"Offensively we should have run out the clock, but we couldn't get it done," said Delhomme, who relied on targets other than Steve Smith.

Smith was held to just two catches for 12 yards. DeShaun Foster led the Panthers in receiving with 55 yards on three catches. Keary Colbert had four catches for 52 yards.

"I was concerned at halftime," Panthers head coach John Fox said about Favre possibly rallying the Packers in the second half. "I've seen him do it too many times. It's something we cautioned ourselves. We expected it to be a tough battle and it was."

Favre, meanwhile, spread the ball around, hitting 10 different receivers and four separate individuals for touchdowns.

Green Bay's troubles started on its first possession. On 3rd-and-10, Favre fumbled on a sack by Michael Rucker and Kindal Moorehead recovered at the Packers seven yard line.

Carolina didn't have too many problems getting in the end zone from there. On third down from the two, Delhomme hit tight end Kris Mangum with a touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.

Favre and the Packers responded on their next possession, marching 71 yards on 10 plays to tie the score. Favre capped the drive with a 21-yard pass Martin with 7 1/3 minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

The game went into the second quarter still tied, but the Panthers scored 16 points in the stanza to take control.

Carolina went ahead 10-7 when John Kasay concluded an 11-play, 72-yard drive that bridged the first and second quarters with a 32-yard field goal that squeaked inside the left upright.

Then, after holding the Packers to a three-and-out on their ensuing possession, Delhomme increased the Panthers lead with a 19-yard toss to Michael Gaines. The PAT was blocked by Green Bay and Carolina held a 16-7 advantage.

The four-play, 69-yard drive was highlighted by a pass play to DeShaun Foster, who carried Green Bay defensive back Earl Little on his arm for nearly 30 yards.

The Packers then appeared to be ready to answer on their next drive, but Favre's pass to Robert Ferguson was picked off by Ken Lucas at the Carolina 21 and returned 32 yards to the Green Bay 47. To make matters worse, Martin was hit with a 15-yard personal foul penalty, giving the Panthers possession at the 32.

Two plays later, Davis ran in from 11 yards out for a comfortable 23-7 halftime cushion.

"The frame of mind is we're very disappointed," Packers head coach Mike Sherman said. "We didn't so enough plays in the first half to put ourselves in a position to win the second half."

In the third quarter, Kasay extended the lead to 26-7 with a 38-yard field goal.

Green Bay then got within 26-13 when Favre hit Driver with a 26-yard pass play for a TD. The two-point conversion that would have drawn the Packers within 11 points failed.

Carolina, however, gave itself some much needed breathing room on its next possession. The Panthers bridged the final two quarters with a seven-play, 35- yard drive that was ended by a one-yard Davis touchdown run. The score gave the Panthers a 32-13 lead after a failed two-point conversion.

Green Bay's last three losses have been by three points or less.
