Fans Gear Up For Colts' MNF Game

Colts fans all over central Indiana are gearing up for the team's "Monday Night Football" game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Activities were scheduled throughout the day right up to the scheduled 9 p.m. kickoff at the RCA Dome.

At a fan rally at downtown's City Market at about noon Monday, ABC's John Madden, Al Michaels and Michele Tafoya jovially took questions about "Monday Night Football" and the Colts.

At one point, sideline reporter Tafoya was asked whether the Colts' Peyton Manning or the Vikings' Dante Culpepper was the better quarterback.

"When you answer this, just remember which -apolis you're in," Michaels told Tafoya, prompting a few chuckles from the crowd.

"Yeah, I know. Peyton is by far ..." Tafoya joked, getting some cheers. "Listen, they're both great. They're so different stylistically. They come from such different backgrounds.

"I think what's very cool about this match-up is how different these guys are, and yet how similar these guys are in their excellence."

Madden, one of the country's best-known NFL analysts, wondered aloud whether the RCA Dome's top could be blown off if a crowd became loud enough. He also said he wished Monday's game was outdoors.

"This is great football weather," he said. "This is what the gods (meant for) football, to play outdoors in this kind of weather, and I was thinking, 'What the heck are we going indoors for?' This would be good hittin' weather."

Colts Versus Vikings

After the questions, Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson honored the three by announcing three city streets would be renamed for the day. Market Street became Tafoya Avenue; Delaware Street became Michaels Boulevard; and Alabama Street became Madden Drive.

Peterson already had declared the day to be "Blue Monday." The mayor encouraged all of Indianapolis to wear Colts colors Monday, and allowed city employees to dress casually during the work day.

The rally went from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At the event, two sideline tickets for Monday's game were offered to the winner of a "Monday Night Football" trivia contest.

Rallies Held In Muncie, Fishers

Dozens of fans showed up at the Minitrista Center in Muncie for a rally between 6 and 7 a.m.

"I wanted to paint my face, show them my Colts pride and that I'm their No. 1 fan," said Josh, who also convinced his girlfriend to paint her face as well.

Colts officials are targeting other areas of the state in order to expand the team's fan base, RTV6's Derrik Thomas reported.

"We had a scrimmage here last spring in Muncie and we had almost 12,000 people. It just goes to show that Muncie and other parts of central Indiana have great Colts fans," Colts sales and marketing vice-president Ray Compton said.

At the event, Muncie Mayor Dan Canan declared Monday to be Colts Day.

In Fishers, Brooks School Elementary held Colts pep rally for its students Monday morning. The school won the event -- which will feature mascots and Colts cheerleaders -- by participating in a statewide banner contest last month.
