Avs Hold Off Flyers

POSTED: 12:13 am EST November 24, 2009

(Sports Network) - David Jones scored two goals to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Pepsi Center.

Cody McLeod, Paul Stastny and Scott Hannan also scored for Colorado, which nearly blew a three-goal lead in the third period but held on to halt a two- game skid. The Avalanche will host Nashville on Wednesday before a two-day, home-and-home set with Minnesota on Friday and Saturday.

"It's nice to get some fortunate bounces and some pucks in the net," said Jones. "It was important for us to re-establish our momentum."

Danny Briere and Jeff Carter both scored twice goals for the Flyers, who have dropped three straight after a stretch in which they won seven of eight games. Philadelphia will conclude its current five-game road trip against the Islanders on Wednesday before returning home for its traditional Black Friday matinee, which this year features the Buffalo Sabres.

Ray Emery allowed four goals on 17 shots and was pulled midway through the second period. Brian Boucher made 13 saves in the loss.

The Flyers trailed 5-2 at the start of the third period, but made it interesting down the stretch. Briere's second goal of the game -- a wrist shot from the inner rim of the right circle after pass by Scott Hartnell from near the right half-wall -- with 8:43 remaining in regulation made it 5-3.

Later in the third, Carter's power-play marker at 15:21 brought the visitors within one. Carter punched home a rebound from the left post after a shot from the left point.

The Flyers were whistled for goaltender interference with over just two minutes remaining and were forced to play out regulation 4-on-5. However, Philly had several chances for the potential tying goal, including a great look by Braydon Coburn from the low slot, but could not net the equalizer.

"We didn't answer the bell -- we've got to play better," said Flyers blueliner Chris Pronger. "The way we played in the third period is how we have to play in every period in every game."

The Avs wasted little time, as Jones' ninth goal just 1:01 after the opening faceoff gave Colorado an early lead. During a scramble in front of Emery, Jones, while falling to the ice, punched the disc into the back of the cage.

Stastny made it 2-0 with a wrist shot from the high left slot soon after at the 5:32 mark.

Inside the final minute of the opening stanza, the Flyers cut their deficit in half. Coburn fired a shot from the left side near the top of the circle and Anderson made the save. However, the rebound kicked out to the opposite side, where Briere was in position and he buried the disc into the top of the net via a slap shot with 34 seconds remaining in the stanza.

Only 29 seconds into the second period, Carter's eighth goal knotted the contest on a rebound tally from the right side moments after a Briere attempt hit the post.

Colorado, though, scored three consecutive goals throughout the remainder of the middle session for a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes of action.

After McLeod's tally at the 6:03 mark, Hannan made it 4-2 just over three minutes later. Hannan gained control of the puck in the slot and released a blazing wrist shot that flew into the back of the cage and chased Emery from the ice.

With 4:44 to go before the second intermission, Jones' second marker of the game put the Avs ahead by three. After several shots that Boucher stopped, the puck was loose near the crease, and Jones, from behind the net, successfully tucked a stuffer attempt inside the left post.

Game Notes

This marked the 30th multi-goal game of Briere's career and the 19th for Carter...Hannan left after the second period with a neck injury...The Avs are now 5-0-0 against the Eastern Conference this season...Colorado was 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Flyers ended 1-for-2 with the extra skater.
