Li'l Cowpokes Will Love Montana

State Is Home To Dinosaurs, Geysers, Year-Round Resorts

There is plenty of fun for the whole family in the Big Sky State. Explore the largest collection of dinosaur fossils in the world. Keep an eye out for grizzlies, wolves, bison and elk as you tour Yellowstone National Park. Or get your fill of outdoor adventure at a year-round mountain resort. See more suggestions below.

Montana Dinosaur Trail
Few travelers are aware of Montana’s rich, paleontological history. The world's first T. rex was discovered in Montana and the state is home to largest collection of dinosaur fossils in the United States. This trail -- spanning the state from east to west -- leads families to displays, exhibits and fun activities at 15 different facilities in 12 northern Montana communities.

Yellowstone National Park
Established in 1872, Yellowstone National Park is America's first national park. Located in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, it is home to a large variety of wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, bison and elk. Preserved within Yellowstone are Old Faithful and a collection of the world's most extraordinary geysers and hot springs, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Big Sky Resort
One of the biggest ski resorts in the United States, Big Sky is year-round hot spot of families in search of outdoor adventure. In winter, skiing, snowboarding, dogsledding are just some of the snow activities available. In summer, vacationers come for whitewater rafting, mountain biking and wild flower hiking.

Missoula
Known as the Garden City or the “Left Bank” of Montana, Missoula is home to the University of Montana. Visiting families with younger kids will want to check out the town’s iconic Carousel with its classic painted ponies. Located on the banks of the Clarks Fork River, you can walk from the Carousel to the nearby observation deck and watch kayakers perform whitewater acrobatics in the frothy river. Missoula also has a state-of-the-art skatepark for families traveling teenagers.

Virginia & Nevada City
Not quite ghost towns, these places are comatose but not dead. Virginia City and its smaller neighbor, Nevada City, offer a living glimpse into Montana of yesteryear. Virginia City has 150 full-time residents and more than 100 historic buildings, making it one of the best preserved gold mining towns in the West. Ride the stagecoach and the refurbished steam locomotive or attend a live theater show. In Nevada City, you can check out the largest collection of music machines in the world at the town's music hall and visit more than 100 more historic buildings saved from locations all over the state.
