INDIANAPOLIS -- About 1,000 of 630,000 postcards that were mailed recently to tell Marion County residents where they should vote give the wrong polling place, the county's voter registration board said Thursday.Having learned of the errors, which came days before next week's special election for the successor of the late U.S. Rep. Julia Carson, the board mailed corrected postcards to the 1,000 on Thursday, panel members said."It just looks as though this one batch got printed wrong," board member John Riordan said at an emergency meeting to discuss the issue.
The initial mailing happened last week. The 1,000 who received incorrect information live in Washington Township in northern Marion County.Six of 1,000 had called to say they believed they received the wrong information, leading the board to discover the errors and send corrected cards, the board said. The 630,000 mailings came after the county reduced its number of voting precincts from 917 to 590 to make the staffing of elections more manageable. An election to choose Carson's successor in the 7th Congressional District -- which comprises most of Marion County -- is set for Tuesday. Running are Carson's grandson, Andre Carson, a Democrat; state Rep. Jon Elrod, R-Indianapolis; and Sean Shepard, a Libertarian.Julia Carson died in December after a battle with cancer.People do not need the postcards to cast votes. People with questions about where they should vote can call county officials at 317-327-8683.
