INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter said Sunday he would not seek a third term in office.Carter, who was first elected to the post in 2000, said it is time for him to pursue other professional challenges. He did not elaborate but said he has not interviewed for other jobs. Carter, a Lafayette native who grew up in Lake County, is known for enforcing the state's do-not-call law, which prevents most telemarketers from calling residents who register for a no-call list.
He was re-elected in 2004 with 1.4 million votes -- the most ever for a candidate in state government.Carter's decision means Indiana will elect a new attorney general in November.
