Anti-Obama Fliers 'Political Porn,' Some Republicans Say

Some Upset Over Mailing Linking Obama, Ayres

Some Republicans are coming forward against a recent mailing by the state party linking Sen. Barack Obama to William Ayres.

The flier, which was distributed this week, calls Ayres -- who was a member of the leftist radical group Weather Underground in the 1970s -- a terrorist, a radical and a friend of Obama's. It also features a 2001 quote from The New York Times from Ayres saying, "I don't regret setting the bombs. I feel we didn't do enough," directly next to a picture of Obama.

6News received several complaints about the flier, including some from registered Republicans, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

"We're Republican and we don't appreciate this kind of stuff and we are going to lose voters over this in my opinion," said Kevin Harold, who said he had originally supported Republican Sen. John McCain.

State party officials dispute that claim, saying they've had very few complaints about the mailing.

"Never in this piece do we call Obama a terrorist, or infer he is one, or has ever been one," said spokesman Jay Kenworthy. "We just want to make the point that he has been associated with William Ayers."

Jim Luurtsema, another Republican angered by the flier, said he likens the negative mailings to "political pornography." A life-long registered Republican in Madison County, Luurtsema said because of the flier he has donated to Obama's campaign and would work on his behalf on Election Day.

During an exclusive satellite interview with 6News' Todd Wallace on Friday, McCain himself defended the party's claims.

"Our statements about [Obama's] association with a known terrorist and his wife, who is a terrorist, is very true and the American people need to know the full facts about that and then make a judgment," he said.

Harold and his wife, Bambi Harold, called the party's explanations inadequate and said they'd e-mailed the state GOP headquarters to ask that they rescind the mailing. Having gotten no response, they said they've decided to vote for Obama.

"It's totally misleading. It's scare tactics on the part of the GOP," Kevin Harold said. "If that's the way they are going to run their campaign it concerns me how they are going to run their White House."
