Gov. Mitch Daniels was quietly confident that he would win re-election Tuesday, buoyed by polls that show him with a double-digit lead over Democratic challenger Jill Long Thompson, who also expressed confidence.

The governor's race is the most high-profile contest in Indiana, aside from the presidential race between Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama.

Long Thompson made stops in five cities Monday, spanning the state from Fort Wayne to Evansville. Daniels made one stop, at McCain's rally in Indianapolis.

Long Thompson and running mate Dennie Oxley met and shook hands with voters who were in a long line at the City-County Building in Indianapolis.

Facing long odds according to the polls, Long Thompson said she still thinks she's going to win.

"Our internal numbers show something very different," Long Thompson said. "We call registered voters, whereas in the polls … it's a random dialing process. So, I'm actually quite confident."

Daniels' campaign aides said that while the governor thinks he will win Tuesday, he isn't counting on anything.

"We've made over 350,000 phone calls in the last few days to our supporters to make sure they get out and vote," said Cam Savage, of the Daniels campaign. "We've knocked on over 80,000 doors just in the last couple of days. Our volunteers aren't taking anything for granted and neither is the governor."

Long Thompson voted in her hometown Tuesday before going to Indianapolis to meet voters at 10 different polling places. Daniels scheduled one stop before the polls close -- where he and his wife will cast their votes.
