Barack Obama has promised to bring change to Washington, D.C., and with more than 2 million people attending inaugural events, it will be quite a change from President George W. Bush's two inaugurations.Here is a list of the official and unofficial inauguration balls and who plans to attend.
**These are the events Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden are scheduled to attend. **On Tuesday, ABC will broadcast the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball live from the Washington Convention Center. Mariah Carey is scheduled to perform, along with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Faith Hill and Mary J. Blige. It is the first official inaugural ball of its kind to be held during a presidential inauguration.
The Youth Ball is for the 18 to 35 age group to celebrate "the role young Americans can play to serve their communities." After junking a similarly themed ball, MTV will broadcast it. Actors Halle Berry and Samuel L. Jackson, Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, director Steven Spielberg, entertainer Barbra Streisand and musical group Fall Out Boy are all expected to attend.
Commander-in-Chief's Inaugural Ball at the National Building Museum. The ball is in honor of the country's active duty and reserve military. Invited guests will include wounded warriors (Purple Heart recipients), families of fallen heroes and spouses of deployed military. Tickets will be provided free of charge to all invited guests. This event is not open to the general public.
The seven other official balls are: the Home States Ball, the Biden Home State Ball, the Mid-Atlantic Ball, the Western and Southern Regional Ball, the Midwest Regional Ball, the New England Ball and the Southern Regional Ball.
The Voto Latino Inaugural Party on Sunday include Marc Antony, Rosario Dawson, Tony Plana and Wilmer Valderrama.
Plenty of star power will be at the the Huffington Post Preinaugural Ball on Monday night at the Newseum. Sting and will.i.am are scheduled to perform for such stars as: Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Denzel Washington, Shakira, Jon Bon Jovi, Halle Berry and Ashton Kutcher.
The Green Inaugural Ball will be held Monday at the Portrait Gallery and be hosted by Al Gore.
Arguably the greatest boxer of all time will be attendance when Muhammad Ali shows up for the Kentucky Inaugural Ball on Monday at the Marriott Wardman Hotel.
Hosted by Russell Simmons, the Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball will take place on Monday at the Harman Center. LL Cool J, T.I. and Young Jeezy are all scheduled to be there.
The nonprofit arts and entertainment advocacy group Creative Coalition will hold a gala to be headlined by rockers Elvis Costello and Sting at the Harman Center for the Arts on Tuesday. Also attending will be Anne Hathaway, Spike Lee, Tim Robbins, Maggie Gyllenhaal and others.
The Purple Ball, Tuesday at the Fairmont Hotel, will be hosted by Lou Gossett Jr. and Il Divo will perform. Expected to attend are: Ashley Judd, Patricia Arquette, John Cusack, Tim Robbins, Ed Harris, Ashley Judd, Josh Lucas, Amy Brenneman, Brendan Fraser, Susan Sarandon and Lisa Marie Presley.
