Mayor Greg Ballard is planning to visit South America in May in search of a cleaner and greener Indianapolis.

In a speech Wednesday morning to the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, Ballard said he will lead a delegation of seven or eight people to Brazil.

The delegation will include representatives from area universities and businesses.

The trip, planned for May 3-8, will be paid for with private money, Ballard said.

Brazil has been touted as a leader in alternative and renewable energy and is the largest exporter of ethanol.

Ballard said he's supportive of green initiatives because they also tend to create new jobs.
