Long Adamant Budget Will Be Only Special Session Action

Indiana Senate Leader: CIB Bailout Possible, If Part Of Budget Bill

Indiana Senate leader David Long said Thursday that the Legislature won't consider anything but the budget when it convenes for a special session next month.

Long was especially adamant that no consideration will be given to gambling bills, adding that if any are introduced, he will assign them to the rules committee to die.

"The gaming issues helped derail the budget process in the House at the end of the regular session," Long said. "They simply cannot be allowed to do that again in the special session."

Long said a Capital Improvement Board bailout would be considered if Gov. Mitch Daniels includes it in his budget bill, but added that it cannot include any gambling provisions.

Daniels himself weighed in on Long's statement early Thursday afternoon.

"When a special session starts, it needs to be about the central question of a budget that preserves essential services and protects Hoosier taxpayers against tax increases," he said. "Gambling entities and other special interests will have to wait.”
