Voters Mull Wishard, School Referenda

Turnout Expected To Be Low For Tuesday's Election

With Tuesday's special election looming, Sunday was the last day voters in Marion County could cast an early vote.

Turnout over the weekend was steady at the City-County Building and at three satellite voting locations, officials said.

Still, turnout is expected to be relatively low, with just one issue on the ballot for the majority of Marion County voters.

That referendum, which will lead to the construction of a new Wishard Memorial Hospital if approved, has been a controversial issue.

Opponents are concerned that Wishard may be banking on unreliable revenue streams and that any potential cost overruns would put a burden on taxpayers.

Supporters said constructing a new facility is crucial to enhancing the facility's highly-regarded burn and trauma units.

Voters in Beech Grove, Perry Township and Franklin Township will decide on property tax increases for building projects.
