McLEAN, Va. -- The wife of Sen. Dick Lugar, R-Ind., was arrested in Virginia on Wednesday night on drunken driving and hit-and-run charges after she crashed into a parked car, police said.Police arrested Charlene Lugar, 76, Wednesday near her home in McLean, Va., after an officer stopped her because he saw damage to the car and smoke coming from the hood.Police later determined that she also hit an unattended parked car about two miles away from the traffic stop. Both charges are misdemeanors.
A trial is scheduled for Jan. 8 in Fairfax County General District Court. Sen. Lugar's office issued a statement about the incident."No other persons were in her car or the unattended car she hit," part of the statement read. "Thankfully, no one was injured. We are deeply sorry and embarrassed that this accident has occurred."Lugar's office said that Charlene Lugar was released from the county's detention facility.
