LAWRENCE, Ind. -- Democrat Deborah Cantwell defeated longtime incumbent Thomas Schneider in the race for Lawrence mayor Tuesday.
With all precincts reporting, Cantwell (pictured, left) had 4,103 votes. Schneider, a Republican, had 3,105.
Schneider's loss comes one year after he lost an election for Marion County sheriff to Frank Anderson.Cantwell, who worked 13 years as a firefighter before a knee condition prompted early retirement, is a Lawrence Township board member.
"I was one of the first two women hired (by) the Lawrence Township Fire Department. Now, being the first woman to take office as mayor, (I'm) kind of being a pioneer in new areas out there," Cantwell told RTV6's Jennifer Carmack Tuesday night.Cantwell said reducing the city's water rates will be a priority when she takes office in Janurary.Schneider (shown at right in file image) declined RTV6's request for an on-camera interview.
