Testing Of Under-Fire Voting Equipment Goes Well

INDIANAPOLIS -- Marion County election officials were relieved after a test of voting equipment and ballots went smoothly Monday. Nebraska-based Election Systems and Software, which supplied the machines and other voting systems for Marion County and 26 other counties, has been under fire for incorrect ballots and other problems. Ten workers checked 65 ballot variations listing different offices and candidates to make sure they were accurate and examined electronic voting machines to ensure they were working before the May 2 primary.
Marion County Clerk Doris Anne Sadler said the county's three-member election board then compared paper ballots with the tally data and found the results were accurate. Sadler's staff also filled out ballots improperly to make sure the machines catch mistakes.Counting machinery did mess up on a test for one race. Sadler said that problem was fixed and the race will be retested Tuesday. If Tuesday's check goes smoothly, the voting equipment will have passed the tests.Election officials had said that if the tests were not successful, election workers would have had to count thousands of May 2 votes by hand.
