Vegas Q&A: Where Should We Stay For A Convention?

Question: A group of people from my company is going to be heading to Vegas next year for a big convention. What is the best hotel for a large group of businesspeople who want to be close to both the convention and the fun of Las Vegas?

Mike in Tucson, Ariz.

Ask Rick

Answer: Part of it depends on where the convention is located, since convention facilities in Vegas are not just at the Convention Center anymore. The Sands Expo Center by the Venetian has millions of square feet of space, as does the new Mandalay Bay facility.

But most of the big conventions happen at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Paradise Road. If that's the case, then the obvious choice is the Las Vegas Hilton. It's located right next door, so you don't need to worry about getting transportation from the convention to your hotel, which will not only save you money but, after a long day of conventioneering (new word), it's convenient as well.

By January of next year, the new Las Vegas Monorail will be open and that dramatically expands your options. It will stop at the MGM Grand, Bally's and Paris, the Flamingo, and Harrah's and the Imperial Palace on the Strip, before skipping over to Paradise Road and delivering you right to the Convention Center. Of those hotels, my personal favorites are Paris, then Bally's and Harrah's. They're all more or less equal in terms of proximity to the action and levels of service and amenities, so at that point it really should be about who will offer you the best deal for your group.
