What's There To Do In Waco, Texas?

Less-Traveled Destination Offers Attractions, Excitement

UPDATED: 4:27 pm EDT July 16, 2009

By Steve Thompson, Contributing writer

Most people who visit Texas wind up in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston or Austin, or in the neighboring communities of these major cities. However, there is plenty to do in lesser-traveled areas of Texas, including the city of Waco in central Texas. Located about four hours north of Houston, Waco offers plenty of attractions and excitement, if you know where to look.

Dr Pepper Museum

If you can't go 24 hours without pouring a can of Dr Pepper down your throat -- or even if you prefer Coke or Pepsi -- you'll love the Dr Pepper Museum. Established in 1988, you won't find a larger collection of soft drink memorabilia anywhere in Texas, and they even have a gift shop to commemorate your trip.

Admittance to Waco's Dr Pepper Museum is just $7 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for kids and students. It is one of the most entertaining and educational activities in Waco. You also won't want to miss its collection of soft-drink-inspired art.

Texas Ranger Museum

One of the most famous Texas institutions, the museum honoring the brave and heroic Texas Rangers is in Waco. Learn about the origins of this elite law enforcement group and explore some of the historic artifacts from the early days of the rangers. This is a particularly interesting place to visit with kids. They can participate in various activities such as solving a mock crime, learning about the tools of the trade and creating topographic maps. Adults, meanwhile, can tour the facility or visit the research center.

Cameron Park

Those who love a chance to get back to nature will enjoy a visit to Cameron Park in Waco. The park covers 400 acres of beautiful land that includes many different scenic points. While you are there, play a round of golf (or disc golf, if you prefer) and take a hike along one of the many trails. There are boating docks and places to fish for those who prefer aquatic pursuits, as well as the Jimmy Bryant Horseshoe Complex.

Collin Street Bakery

Do you love fresh bread, delicious pastries and historic buildings? If so, the Collin Street Bakery in Waco will satisfy on all counts. Housed in a southern-plantation style building just off I-35, the bakery is a beautiful sight with huge white columns and large picture windows. Inside, you'll find some of the most delicious food in all of Waco. Enjoy a croissant sandwich for lunch or pick up a few slices of cheesecake to take with you. There are fruit cakes, doughnuts, cookies, pies, and every type of fresh bread you can imagine.

Waco Lake

Also called Lake Waco depending on who you are talking to, this popular Waco destination is a prime example of a place where form meets function. The lake itself is beautiful, with clear water and sandy beaches, but it also serves an important purpose in the Waco community: flood control. There is plenty to do at Waco Lake, from fishing from a boat or from the beach to playing sand volleyball near the picnic pavilions. Take a walk through the surrounding park or just lounge near the water, soaking up sun and reading a good book.
