Experience Napa's Wine, Bodie's Ghosts

Northern California Offers Lighthouses, Tours, Cartoons

No matter what your pleasure -- ziplines, lighthouse tours or cartoon museums -- these hidden hot spots in Northern California offer a little bit of everything.

The Lighthouse Inn at Point Cabrillo is in Mendocino. The cliff-top 1909 head lightkeeper’s house was recently converted into a small bed and breakfast, but the bed and breakfast is more than just a place to rest your head. The modern-day lightkeeper hosts a nighttime tour of the lighthouse, which still shines out to sea every 10 seconds. The lighthouse sits on 300 acres of nature preserve and the views make it worth taking a stroll. This tranquil spot is perfect a romantic or relaxing getaway.

The exclusive tour at Ladera Vineyards is a private tour at one of Napa Valley’s fastest-growing cabernet houses. Led by the Ladera family, the tour takes you 1,100 feet above sea level to Lone Canyon, which is 480 acres of steep terrain. The high elevations give the grapes an intense flavor. The tours finish with lunch and wine tasting atop Lone Canyon Vineyard. Tours and tastings are by appointment only through October. A four-person, two-and-half-hour tour runs about $25 a person.

The zipline at Moaning Cavern at the Sierra Nevada foothills in Gold Country allows visitors to take a 60-foot long sky bridge to a launch tower 100 feet off the ground and zoom across the foothills at 40 mph. Zippers can even race in pairs. No experience is necessary and the zipline guides are there to assist. For the less adventurous, walking tours and optional rope rappel in the cavern are also available.

Cartoon Art Museum offers seven major exhibits a year from superhero comics to political cartoons and popular comic strips. It also has a 6,000-piece permanent collection. There is also a cartoonist-in-residence program that allows visitors to watch the cartoonists in action. If you want to try drawing yourself, there’s a drop-in cartoon class on Saturdays.

Bodie State Historic Park Ghost Town lets visitors walk down the deserted streets of this genuine, gold-mining ghost town. Bodie is a favorite of history buffs and Old West fans.
