INDIANAPOLIS -- Following Tuesday's arrest of Indianapolis Colts running back Dominic Rhodes on suspicion of drunken driving, the team president expressed disappointment and pointedly reminded the news media that the player's contract is about to end.A state trooper pulled Rhodes over at about 3 a.m. Tuesday on northbound Interstate 65, just south of 71st Street. Police said Rhodes was driving 81 mph in a 55-mph zone in his GMC truck.Rhodes was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. State police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said it was "a normal, run-of-the-mill drunk driving arrest."
Rhodes was cooperative with the state troopers who arrested him, police said. He was held overnight and was released on his own recognizance after an initial hearing Tuesday afternoon.Rhodes, who wore a black sweat suit with red trim, said nothing during the hearing. In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, Colts President Bill Polian said the organization was "very troubled by Dominic Rhodes' arrest for DUI.""It should be noted that (his) contract with the Colts expires on Feb. 28, and under NFL rules, he will be a free agent, although still subject to league discipline under the substances of abuse policy," Polian said.Polian said the team would have "no further comment until the case has been dealt with by the justice system."Rhodes' attorney Jim Voyles, who was at the county arrestee processing center, said he did not know where Rhodes was before the arrest.Rhodes delivered an MVP-like performance in the Super Bowl, rushing for more than 100 yards in the win over the Chicago Bears. Afterward, he was featured in a Disney World television commercial with coach Tony Dungy.Rhodes has been in trouble with the law before. Following a 2002 domestic disturbance at his home, Rhodes pleaded innocent in Marion Superior Court to misdemeanor charges of battery and domestic battery. Latrina Moore, who lived with Rhodes at the time and is the mother of a child with Rhodes, said Rhodes hit her and shoved her to the floor after she confronted him about other women calling their home, prosecutors said at the time.Under an agreement with prosecutors in that case, Rhodes was charged with domestic battery but avoided prosecution. Instead, Rhodes was placed in a diversionary program and underwent mental health counseling. The Associated Press left a message Tuesday seeking comment from Rhodes' agent, Michael McCartney.Rhodes started all 16 regular-season games in 2006, rushing for 641 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was Edgerrin James' backup since 2001 and had a chance to become the Colts featured back in 2006 but instead shared the job with rookie Joseph Addai. The six-year veteran has rushed for 2,274 yards in his career.Fans React To Rhodes' Arrest"I thought the Colts were the good boys. I would expect that from the Pacers at this point," said Brian Lock, a Colts fan. "I know that kind of stuff happens, but it's obviously frowned upon.""He's young and he's going to have fun. That's how I think of it," said Carole Busch. "He's human.""I think he could probably make better decisions. He made some bad decisions," said Lori Schlosser.Watch 6News and refresh this page for updates.
