Dungy Among 5 Making Indy's Super Bowl Pitch

Organizers Hope Coach's Star Power Is Persuasive

POSTED: 7:38 pm EDT May 21, 2007

Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy will be among five people presenting Indianapolis' bid to host the 2011 Super Bowl during a meeting with NFL team owners Tuesday, 6News' Ray Cortopassi reported.

The names of Indianapolis' presenters were a secret until the leader of the city's bid, Fred Glass, announced the roster Monday.

Team owners on Tuesday will award the NFL's 2011 championship game to one of three cities -- Indianapolis, Dallas or Phoenix -- after hearing 15-minute presentations from the bidders in a hotel in downtown Nashville. Written bids were to be submitted to the league Monday night.

Besides Dungy, Indianapolis' advocates during the meeting will be Tony George, president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; Jeff Smulyan, president of Indianapolis-based Emmis Broadcasting; Tom Jernstedt, vice president of the NCAA, which is headquartered in Indy; and Glass.

"I feel good about our chances," Glass said. "I'm optimistic that we're going to be selected, but I can accept the outcome either way because I know that we've done everything that we possibly can."

Glass said the credibility of Dungy, whose team won the Super Bowl in February, will add significant weight to Indianapolis' bid.

"(Dungy is) one of the 100 most influential Americans as identified by Time magazine, coach of the Super Bowl champions, (and) revered in all the various communities that he's been in," Glass said.

Colts president Bill Polian, who hired Dungy to coach the football team five years ago, said he also felt that Dungy is a good choice for the bid presentation.

"When the owners see them, they'll be very impressed and convinced, absolutely, that we can pull this game off," Polian said.

One of the selling points of Indianapolis' bid is a new stadium, which is set to be open for Colts games starting in 2008.
