Big Ten Network Promotes Its Product

Will Battle Cable Operators Over Placement

POSTED: 4:57 pm EDT July 24, 2007

The Big Ten Network will carry 35 football games and 105 basketball games this season, but the big question is, will you be able to see them?

The network has reached contractual agreements with 75 cable operators and Direct TV, but it has not reached agreement with Comcast.

Comcast serves 225,000 customers in the Indianapolis area. It wants to place the Big Ten network on a sports tier and charge $4.95 per month.

The Big Ten wants its programming placed on basic cable.

“We are taking a stand against these outrageous demands,” said Comcast spokesman Mark Apple.

Negotiations are ongoing. The Big Ten is hoping fans will contact the cable companies and persuade them to offer the network on basic cable.

The Big Ten Network is scheduled to launch Aug. 30.
