WASHINGTON -- The Washington Redskins were making plans to talk to Indianapolis Colts assistants Jim Caldwell and Ron Meeks about the Redskins' head coaching vacancy, an unnamed source told The Associated Press.Redskins assistant coach Gregg Williams also has spoken to team owner Dan Snyder about the opening, most recently on Monday. Williams has been in charge of the Redskins' defense since 2004. The interviews were confirmed by a person familiar with the selection process. He spoke on condition of anonymity because the Redskins haven't publicly stated the names of any candidates.
The person said Snyder has several more candidates he wishes to interview, including Caldwell and Meeks. The Redskins have already spoken to Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and at least one other candidate. The process picked up speed when the Colts were upset in the AFC playoffs Sunday by the San Diego Chargers, freeing up Caldwell and Meeks to be contacted this week. Caldwell is the Colts' assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach, and Meeks is the Colts' defensive coordinator.Caldwell, who also is a candidate for head coaching jobs in Atlanta and Baltimore, is believed to be the front-runner succeed Colts head coach Tony Dungy should Dungy decide to retire. Dungy said Monday he would probably take a week to decide whether he wants to return for the 2008 season.Dungy's contract with the Colts runs through 2009. The Redskins are looking for a successor to Joe Gibbs, who resigned last week.
