Dungy Denies Report He's Decided Future With Colts

Coach Says ProFootballTalk.com Report False

POSTED: 4:18 pm EST January 16, 2008

Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy on Wednesday denied an Internet report that a decision on whether to retire has been made.

ProFootballTalk.com, citing a "league source," reported Wednesday that Dungy would step down. However, Dungy told ESPN that the report was false and that he had yet to decide whether to remain with the Colts for the 2008 season, according to ESPN.com.

Dungy told the news media on Monday he would announce next week whether he would return. On Wednesday evening, Dungy told 6Sports Director Dave Furst by phone that the plan hasn't changed.

"I wanted to give it a few days to get away and make my decision, and that's what I’m doing," Dungy said. "I don't know why the media jumps to their own conclusions. I still intend on flying back this weekend and letting (Colts owner Jim Irsay) know where I'm headed. It's still very much in the air. Let's see what happens this week."

Dungy previously had said that his family has moved from Indianapolis to Florida and that his son has enrolled at a Tampa high school. Colts owner Jim Irsay has said he'll do what it takes to keep Dungy, saying he is willing to give Dungy more money and more time off to go to his home in Tampa.

The Colts were eliminated from this year's playoffs on Sunday in a 28-24 loss to the visiting San Diego Chargers.

Dungy has spent the past six seasons with the Colts, reaching the playoffs each year with at least 10 victories. He has a regular-season record of 73-23, including 13-3 this past season, with Indianapolis -- winning five straight AFC South titles.

Before taking over the Colts prior to the 2002 season, Dungy spent six years as the head coach of Tampa Bay. He had a regular-season mark of 54-42 with the Buccaneers, guiding them to four playoff appearances.

Dungy's contract with the Colts runs through 2009.
