2 Starters Booted From IU Basketball Team

Turmoil Roils Indiana Basketball Program

Indiana University confirmed Tuesday that guards Armon Bassett and Jamarcus Ellis were dismissed from the team.

Media relations director J.D. Campbell did not give a reason for the dismissals.

The Indianapolis Star reported Monday that both players missed an appointment with interim coach Dan Dakich, then didn't show up to run laps as punishment.

Both were also suspended during the season for violating team rules. Bassett missed three games and Ellis missed the regular-season finale against Penn State.

Bassett was a third-team All-Big Ten selection, averaging 11.4 points per game. Ellis averaged 6.8 points per game.

The dismissals could mean Indiana would have no returning starters next season if freshman guard Eric Gordon chooses to enter the NBA draft.

The team also will have a new coach to replace Kelvin Sampson, who resigned in February amid NCAA accusations of recruiting violations.

The dismissals inject more drama into the school's basketball program.

Former Hoosier Steve Alford, widely considered a candidate for the Hoosiers' job, signed a three-year contract extension with his current school, the University of New Mexico, on Monday.

Alford's new contract locks him in until 2016, but there is no buyout clause in the contract.

Over the weekend, another target of the IU search committee, Washington State coach Tony Bennett, said that he plans to remain at that school.

The Hoosiers closed the season with a whimper after a strong start under Sampson.
