POSTED: 4:50 pm EST January 4, 2009

(Sports Network) - Shy Ely poured in a game-high 24 points and grabbed six rebounds, as the Evansville Purple Aces overcame the Indiana State Sycamores, 65-59, in a Missouri Valley Conference battle at the Hulman Center.

Nate Garner also had a big day with 21 points and seven rebounds for Evansville (10-3, 2-1 MVC), which snapped a steak of 16 consecutive losses to MVC foes away from Roberts Stadium. That streak included 14 straight regular season road games, and two MVC Tournament first round contests.

Harry Marshall led the way for Indiana State (3-11, 1-2) with 16 points on 7- of-14 field goals. Aaron Carter chipped in with 11 points, as the Sycamores suffered their second straight setback.

The Sycamores took a 31-21 lead to the intermission courtesy of a 57.1 percent shooting effort from the floor over the first 20 minutes of play.

Ely scored 12 of Evansville's final 18 points, as the Purple Aces came from behind for the six-point victory.

Evansville shot only 36.1 percent from the floor, but was able to compensate for that performance by dominating the boards, 42-27, including a 19-5 advantage on the offensive glass. The Purple Aces also scored 27 points off 17 Indiana State turnovers.
