Phillips Leads Reds Past Indians

POSTED: 2:19 am EDT June 29, 2009

(Sports Network) - Brandon Phillips went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and three runs scored, as the Cincinnati Reds breezed past the Cleveland Indians, 8-1, in the rubber match of a three-game interleague set at Progressive Field.

"It's good to do something positive, to have a game like I did today, especially on my birthday," said Phillips, who turned 28 on Sunday.

Jonny Gomes hit a two-run homer, and Ramon Hernandez went 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Reds, who have won three of four since dropping the previous four games.

Micah Owings (5-8) picked up the win after going six-plus innings. The right- hander allowed a run on five hits, walked four and struck out four. He had lost five of the last six decisions coming into the contest but improved to 2-6 in his last nine road appearances.

Victor Martinez accounted for the Indians only run with a sacrifice fly. Cleveland has dropped 10 of its last 12 games.

David Huff (3-3) was pinned with the loss after surrendering seven runs -- six earned -- on nine hits over five innings of work. He fanned three and walked one.

"I have to get ahead of hitters, I have to get that first strike," Huff said. "These guys are great hitters. They are up there for a reason and they definitely showed that today."

The Indians posted a run in the first to grab the early lead. Singles by Asdrubal Cabrera and Grady Sizemore to start the inning put runners on first and third before Martinez's sacrifice fly chased in the first run of the game.

With the bases loaded and one out in the third, Phillips laced a single to right that brought home a pair. Later in the inning, Hernandez tripled off the left-center field wall to plate two more and give the Reds a 4-1 advantage.

Cincinnati broke things open in the fifth on an RBI single from Phillips and Gomes' two-run homer that just cleared the right-field fence to make it a 7-1 game. Hernandez's RBI base hit in the seventh stretched the Reds lead to seven.

Josh Roenicke recorded the final three outs of the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Game Notes

Cincinnati will begin a six-game homestand against Arizona on Tuesday, while Cleveland welcomes the Chicago White Sox to Progressive Field on Monday...The Reds won the season series, 4-2, and have taken nine of the last 12 against the Indians.
